Movie Night   By: Laura, Christy, Mandy, Denise, Kay, Piper

Lorelai and Rory walk into Luke's for some breakfest.

"Thank God it's Friday. What do you want to do tonight? Oh, how about scary movie night. We can get all the classics. Nightmare on elm street, Halloween 1 through 53, Spice World?"

"Actually, I meant to ask you if I could stay at Lanes tonight?"

"Since when can Lane have anyone sleep over?"

"Since her mom went out of town for some antique type convention and her grandmother is once again watching her"

"Oh, so you guys are doing the whole 'lock grandma in her room' deal, right"

"Yup, that's the plan"

"Well, have fun"

"Maybe we can do scary movie night saturday night"

"I don't know. I'm really in the mood for it tonight, and when you are in the mood to be scared you take it"

Luke comes by the table

"What can I get you guys?"

"Coffee and pancakes for me", Lorelai says

"french toast and coffee for me Luke" replys Rory

"Okay, be right back"

He walks away

"Hey, mom, maybe you could invite Sookie to watch movies with you"

"Sookie and Jackson are out of town visiting his relatives"

"Oh, well, maybe you can ask someone else"

"Who"

Luke comes back to the table and sets their coffee down.

"What about Luke" Rory says

"What about me?" Luke says

"You want to watch scary movies with mom tonight? She is going to be home all alone and will need a big strong guy to make sure she doesn't get too freaked out"

Lorelai scoffs "I never freak out!"

"That's what she always says then she climbs into bed with me later on in the night saying that there was a clown that was looking at her through the window"

"Yeah, well, I learned never to watch 'It' again"

"I'm not much for scary movies" Luke replys

"Ah, more of a romantic comedy sorta guy?" asked Lorelai

"Um, no."

"Chick fics?"

"No"

"How many times you see 'Ya-Ya sisterhood'"

"I have things to do"

Luke walks away

"Good job mom, now you really don't have anyone to hang out with tonight"

Lorelai sighs and walks over to the counter...

"Come on, Luke, please? I promise I'll make it worth your while." Lorelai told him.

"And just how do you propose to do that?"

"I'll think of something."

"No, Lorelai."

"Come on!" She whined.

"Luke, can I talk to you a sec?" Rory said.

"Sure." Rory walked over to Luke and the two began whispering.

"Luke, I know how you feel about my mom."

"You do?"

"Everyone in this town does. Except her. This is your chance to be completely alone with her. And the setting is perfect. If she gets scared she'll hide her eyes against your shoulder or ask you to put your arm around her. It's perfect."

"Rory, your mom does not feel that way about me."

"Yes she does, Luke. She just doesn't know it yet. Help her to see it. Who knows when you'll get another oppurtunity like this one?"

"Good point, kiddo."

"You can thank me later, when you two are finally a couple." Rory told him and Luke chuckled. The two of them walked back over to Lorelai.

"Okay, Lorelai. I'll come over and watch movies with you. On one condition."

"What's that?"

"That you don't rent Hallowen H20 or any of the I Know What you did last summer movies."

"What about Scream?"

"Only the first one."

"Okay. Deal."

"Good."

Later that evening, Lorelai is sitting at the kitchen table while Rory is in her room packing her backpack to stay at Lane's.
"Hey Rory?"

"Yeah?" Rory called back from her doorway.

"What did you say to Luke earlier?"

"Uh.. just that he should take a break from the diner now and then."

"Uh-huh. And when is it a concern of yours how much time Luke spends in the diner?"

Rory walked in, backpack on, and stood by the table. "Well, he's coming over. Isn't that what you wanted?"

Lorelai gave her an odd look. "I guess."

"So just be happy about it." Rory picked up a box of Twinkies. "I'm taking these."

"What? Rory, no."

"You don't honestly expect me to spend an entire night without sugar. I am your daughter, after all."

Lorelai frowned. "Okay, well, fair enough. Have fun and tell Lane hey for me."

"Will do." Rory gave her mom a quick hug and headed out the front door, leaving Lorelai alone in the kitchen to ponder.

Rory opened the front door just as Luke walked up to it. "Oh, Luke. Hi."

"Hi." He stood looking at her, wondering if he should go ahead and go in since the door was open, or what. He'd been here plenty of times but not for just a social call, far as he could remember. Unless it was to ramble about some idiotic thing he'd done.

Rory held the door open and finally realized he was probably waiting for her to say something. "You can come in, you know."

"Oh. Yeah. I know." Luke stepped inside.

Rory smiled to herself at how nervous Luke seemed. "I was just heading over to Lane's- Mom's in the kitchen."

Luke nodded, and gestured over his shoulder. "Okay. Well, I'm just gonna... go on in there."

Rory gave him a reassuring smile. "It'll be fine, you'll see. Have fun."

Luke stood in his spot until Rory closed the door behind her- was he too early?

"Luke? Is that you?" Lorelai came out of the kitchen to see Luke standing there. "Oh, um, hey. You're early."

"Lorelai, you told me to be here at 8. It's now 8:11."

"Exactly. By 8 I obviously meant 8:23."

"You just made that number up. And also, you're completely ready."

"Uh, no I'm not. I haven't gotten the carrots out yet."

"Lorelai, when was the last time you ate a carrot?"

"First off, I had an entire carrot cake last night. Secondly, they're not for me, obviously. They're for you. I told you I'd make it worth your while," she smiled maniacally nodding her head.

"Are you on drugs?"

"No, but I think the cake is catching up to me."

"Wouldn't that have already caught up to you?"

"Oh no. I'm a trooper. I've held it back for ... almost 24 hours now."

"Well, congratulations."

"Thank you. I enjoy having my accomplishments recognized. Now. Let's recognize them. What is that in your hands?"

"I can't believe I'm feeding your addictions."

"Score! Brownies? Danishes?"

"Donuts," he grumbled.

"Oh Luke, this is going to be the best night ever! Trust me, you haven't lived until you've heard Lorelai Gilmore's running commentary on a movie," she declared as she turned around and marched into the kitchen to get drinks and the promised carrot sticks. Crinkle cut.

"I'm not catering your funeral, you know," he called after her.

She brought the food into the living room and sat down on the couch and patted beside her, motioning for Luke to sit down. "Well I'm glad I have Sookie then. You'd probably serve carrot sticks anyway."

"Just put the video in, Lorelai."

Lorelai rolled her eyes and made an unattractive sound. "I'll put it in once the food is ready."

Luke sighed. "Fine, do it your way."

Lorelai trotted over to the microwave and put the popcorn inside. Luke widened his eyes and ran over to it before she could press the start button.

"Luke! What are you doing?" she yelled.

"Lorelai, now I really do think you're high! You're supposed to take the plastic OFF the popcorn bag before you put it in the microwave!" He shook his head at her.

Lorelai smiled sheepishly. "Oh, well, yeah, I knew that. I was just testing you."

"Uh huh."

"Ok, scat, the popcorn is safely unplasticized, and it is now being popped in the microwave. You don't have to worry about anything."

"Famous last words."

"Scat!"

Luke held his hands up in surrender and walked back to the living room where he made himself comfortable on the couch.

"I'm putting the movie in!" he called.

"No you're not!"

Luke sighed and rolled his eyes at her stubborness. "It's just going to be ads for the first ten minutes, Lorelai."

"Yes, but I love the ads. Rory and I always watch them and contemplate whether we're going to see the movie advertised or not. It's tradition."

"Ok, fine, I'll wait. Just hurry up."

Lorelai came into the living room a few minutes later with a bowl of popcorn, two bags of chips, beer, coke, numerous bags of candy, and a grin. Luke put a hand to his head.

"If you die on this couch tonight, don't expect me to do anything."

"Hmph. I am not going to die from eating junk food."

"It's gonna clog up your arteries sooner or later."

Lorelai stood up and twirled. "See? Look, I'm not overweight or in need of Jenny Craig or Richard Simmons."

"Yeah, that's true. I think you're some sort of alien. Because I have no idea how you maintain such a great body with the amount of junk food you consume."

Lorelai grinned. "You think I have a great body?"

Luke kicked himself for saying that out loud. "Um...uh, yeah, I guess you do, uh...have a good...uh....body." He was blushing furiously and Lorelai's grin was growing wider.

"Thanks, Luke."

"Welcome. Now, uh, can we start the movie?"

"Sure." She smiled.

Lorelai turned out the lights so that the room was lit only by the television.

"What are you doing?" Luke asked, alarmed that she was turning out the lights when it was already dark outside.

"You can't watch a scary movie with the lights on, Luke." Lorelai sat down in her normal position in the floor, leaning against the couch so she could reach all the food supplies on the table. Luke sat down on the other end of the sofa.

"Uh, what the hell are you doing?" Lorelai asked.

Luke looked at her. "What are you talking about?"

"You can't sit up there and watch the movie," she told him, looking at him like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

"And where would you suggest I sit?"

"On the floor."

"When there's a perfectly good piece of furniture right here, and you want me to sit in the floor."

"Yes. Because if I sit on the sofa I can't reach everything as well, and plus the television is more at eye level this way."

"But I'm not going to be eating the junk food," he defended. Sitting on the floor next to Lorelai in the dark would be a little more distracting than he could handle.

"But if you sit back there I can't see you."

"Why do you need to see me if we're watching a movie?"

"Because if you're behind me, I'll get totally creeped out that you might be staring at my great body, or attempting to club me over the head with a carrot stick during a dramatic scene."

"Fine. I'll sit in the floor." Luke settled himself uncomfortably in the floor a couple of feet away from Lorelai, sitting indian style. He placed the bowl of carrot sticks between them as an obstacle.

Lorelai grinned, knowing she'd gotten her way with him as usual. "Thank you."

"Oh look, the previews are over," Luke said in attempt to shut her up, and get his mind off of her previous comment. He was all too aware of her sitting beside him as the movie began. He kept thinking of what Rory had said to him, and hoping to God she was right.

Sometime later into the movie, Luke noticed as Lorelai had gotten quite a bit closer to him. He'd spent far more time looking at her subtly than he had watching the movie.

Suddenly the telephone rang, making Luke jump and Lorelai letting out a small yelp.

"You gonna get that?" He asked, after she stared at it ringing.

"Oh, yeah. Sure." Lorelai's heart was racing a mile a minute from the startling ring. "Hello?"

Luke straightened up the scattered carrots while Lorelai was on the phone, they'd been strewn about when they jumped up.

"That was Sookie," Lorelai said a moment later. "Nothing important, just rambling about some new dish she's found..." her voice trailed off as she looked out the window.

"What's wrong?" Luke asked as Lorelai got a strange look across her face.

"Nothing, I just.. I thought I saw something outside," Lorelai said. "It was probably nothing, I'm just imagining things from the movie."

"You want me to go outside and look around?" Luke asked. He was already headed towards the door.

"Well, uh..." Lorelai handed him an umbrella. "Here."

"What's this for?"

"You know, protection."

Luke shrugged and took the umbrella. He slowly walked out on the porch and walked around one side of the house.

A moment later, Lorelai grabbed a flashlight and opened the backdoor, vision of Scream in her mind. She crept silently around the other side of the house.

"Aaargh!" She yelled as someone hit her from behind. She swung around with the flashlight to see Luke.

"Geez!" he exclaimed. "What the hell are you doing out here?"

"Looking for you!" Lorelai rubbed her arm. "God, I'm glad that wasn't my head!"

"Well, sorry. I didn't know you were out here," Luke apologized. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. Not sure about the umbrella though," Lorelai said as they headed back inside. They stood in the kitchen.

"Now what?" Luke asked.

"Um, preferably not the movie. I've had enough scares for the night."

"Right." Luke responded. So much for Rory's theory on the movie.

"Oh, I know! We can play cards." Lorelai pulled out a deck from the kitchen drawer and took them into the living room, shutting off the movie.

Time passed and after beating Lorelai about ten times and letting her win twice, Luke stood up. "I should get going, it's getting late."

Lorelai stood up as well. "Oh, okay."

"So I guess I'll see you tomorrow morning," he said.
"Right. Tomorrow morning," she replied. "Have a fresh pot of coffee waiting, I'm not getting much sleep tonight."
Luke smiled. "You got it."
She walked him to the door and opened it for him. "Bye Luke."
"Bye."
As Lorelai closed the door behind her, her heart began to race again. She was alone, in the house, with Babette probably asleep next door, and it was dark outside. She sat down on the couch and tried not to think about how completely silent it was in her house. She heard a floorboard creak upstairs. "Uh oh..." she whispered, creeping towards the place where Luke had left the battered umbrella. She picked it up and lept back onto the couch. Just then, someone pounded on the door.
"Who is it?" Lorelai asked nervously.
"It's Luke. I forgot my-" Lorelai opened the door.
"Can you stay?"
"What?"
"Can you stay? It's dark, and scary, and really quiet, and things keep creeping around, and can you please, please stay?" she pleaded. Luke considered it. This could be his chance.
"Okay, I'll stay." he said.

Before he knew it, Lorelai had practically dragged him in the house. "I only asked you cause I knew you'd be scared to walk home in the dark," she teased.
Luke gave a short laugh. "Yeah right. You're the one that's scared."

"How can I be scared when I have someone whom I know first hand that can clobber someone with an umbrella?" She asked once they had gotten inside, and Lorelai locked the door behind her.

"Yeah, sorry about that by the way." Luke was more nervous now than he'd been during the movie, and he wondered how Lorelai could be so calm. Obviously she didn't see this as meaning anything, she was just asking him to stay because she scared to stay alone after the night's occurences. He sighed to himself.

An hour later, Luke looked over to see Lorelai practically falling asleep sitting on the other end of the sofa. She'd insisted she wasn't tired and that they should watch Indiana Jones, and not halfway into the movie she was asleep on the couch. At least it made it slightly less awkward for him. He moved to turn down the volume, and Lorelai sat up. "Hey, what're you doing?"

"I was just turning it down."

"But then I can't hear it."

"You're asleep," he reasoned.

"No I'm not."

"Whatever." He turned it back up and sat the remote beside him.

Moments later, Lorelai reached over and turned the volume back down. "Hey, Luke? Can I ask you something?"

"I'm sure I can't stop you," he replied.

"Did you come here because of what Rory said to you?"

Luke tensed up-- she'd known all this time what Rory had said to him? "I uh..." He hesitated a moment. "Yes. Sort of."

"She's right, you know." Lorelai looked at him.

"She-" Luke stopped and looked over at her. Maybe Rory had been right, Lorelai did feel something. He leaned over slowly and kissed her, and she kissed him back for a fractoin of a second before she sat back.

"Uuuh, what the hell was that for?" She asked.

Luke looked at her with a hurt expression on her face. "I thought-"

"What?"

"You just said that Rory-"

"Oh, God. I am such an idiot." Lorelai turned on the couch so that she was facing him. "She didn't say... oh, God."

"What didn't she say?" Luke pressed the question. He tried not to focus on the fact that he'd finally kissed her and been rejected.

"She said that-" Lorelai's voice cracked slightly- "that she told you ou spent too much time at the diner and should get out more often."

Luke smiled the tiniest bit. That explained a lot.

"What did she? Tell you?" Lorelai asked suddenly.

Luke swallowed hard. May as well tell the truth, he thought. What more damage could he do? So he told her.

"Oh," Lorelai said. "Oooh." The realization crossed her face. Then regret. "Oh, God. I'm sorry about... about before. I just I totally wasn't expecting that and-" The feeling Lorelai had had during that split second came back to her, and rather than keep talking she leaned back in and kissed him, this time taking him by surprise.
